25th of November is the international day for the elimination of violence against women.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports from those on the front lines have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, has intensified.
Thus, our class teachers and I have drawn the attention of our students on this issue, for example through videos presenting the topic, followed by a discussion.
Each girl had the chance to express her own opinion and feelings towards this. The girls were asked to creatively prepare an artistic work which represents the women's voice.
Click here for an example created by our students.

"ERINNERN FÜR DIE GEGENWART -
REMEMBERING FOR OUR PRESENT TIME"
Together with the Central Office for Schools abroad (ZfA) the German Federal Foreign Office has called on German schools abroad to develop projects on the culture of remembrance for the 2019/2020 school year.
Therefore 17 students from 8B and 9B (now 9B and 10B) spent a whole school year studying the history of Schmidt-Schule after 1948, together with their history teachers Ms Barbara Griebler and Ms Meike Kasper.
They planned the content of the film, wrote the script, developed interview questions and then made a video film entitled "Standort – Standpunkt: Eine Deutsche Schule in Jerusalem" (Location - Point of View: A German School in Jerusalem).
Although the Corona pandemic then put a damper on the whole project, our students had already completed a large part of the film, so the project could be continued online. Our students did a fantastic job so that a wonderful film about a part of the school's history was created and could be sent in time to Berlin last week.
We would like to share their film here with the Schmidt-Schule community.
Participants:
Raghad Awad, Joelle Khoury, Tahrir Atrash, Hala Shaban, Lamar Hammouri, Razan Awar, Duha Abu Ghayyatha, Nareen Salem, Raya Barakat, Amira Loussi, Magdalena Loussi, Amira Rashid, Christine Anbar, Jude Salman, Leena Abdeen, Nareen Kamar, Nathalie Stephan, Nikoleta Mansoor, Saba Zamamiri
Information (29/10/2020)
In accordance with official regulations, Schmidt-Schule prepares to partially reopen school for classes 1-4, beginning on Monday, 2 November.
More detailed information for parents are sent out through the school's newsletter.
Information (8/9/2020)
Schmidt-Schule has just been informed by the local authorities that schools in our area have to be closed until further notice.
Thus the campus of Schmidt-Schule will remain closed for students from Wednesday, 9 September, on.
All lessons are now taught by "distant learning" via Google Classroom and video meetings.
Your daughter will receive a distant learning timetable from her class teacher tomorrow, which is put into effect from tomorrow, 9 September.
All lessons on this timetable are planned for the scheduled times.
So your daughter has a regular daily timetable - for most of our classes from period 1 to period 8 (7:45-15:00).
This week all lessons of the first, third, fifth and seventh period (Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday) are taught as video meetings.
The first regular video meeting will be tomorrow (Wednesday) in the third period (see subject in the new timetable) for most of the classes.
In the following week all lessons of the second, fourth, sixth and eighth period (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday) are taught as video meetings.
On Sunday we will send you a short reminder about the scheduling of the video meetings.
In all other lessons students work daily on their subject assignments, given via Google Classroom. Assignments are usually available by 7:45 each morning and should be finished by 16:00.
Regular breaks are implemented into the timetable and help the students to have a well-structured school day.
Do not hesitate to contact your daughter's class teacher in case of specific needs or personal requests.
Best regards
Dr. Eva Schönemann
Information (5/9/2020)
The first week of school has passed and we are grateful for a smooth start of school during difficult times. Following the pandemic regulations and putting them into practice on our school campus, evaluating schedules, improving procedures and thus creating a positive school atmosphere for our girls has been a main focus and concern for all of us. We are so thankful to everyone in our school community who makes this happen - thank you for all your feedback and support!
Red Zones
There has been talk on the news of possible closures / restrictions in red zone areas.
We have read different reports as to if this includes certain districts of Jerusalem, where we have students and staff. Be assured that we will inform you on the latest developments as soon as confirmed information is available to us. We wanted to reassure you all that there will be an ongoing partnership, whatever this school year brings.
Teachers are prepared to use Google Classroom and video meetings with their students, also in case of individual quarantines or lockdown.
Beginning from next week, regular video meetings will be part of the class schedule on distant learning days. If you have further questions or concerns, please contact your daughter’s class teacher.
During regular school days
During regular school days, our kiosk offers snacks and beverages: Students can choose in the first lesson in their classroom from a menu list and pay. Their orders are then delivered later directly to the classroom.
Copybooks are sold next week every day in the hall until 10:30 AM.
We are thankful that we have been able to have such a good start with our students at Schmidt-Schule. This is something we can appreciate and take strength and comfort from.
We trust that students, parents and staff are able to navigate together through these challenging times in the best possible way.
Best regards
Dr. Eva Schönemann
Information (30/8/2020)
As we are approaching the first school day, we want to specify information from our last newsletter.
Our goal is to offer as many regular lessons as possible in class and at school.
However, as Schmidt-Schule we have to comply with the official pandemic regulations for schools. Due to these regulations we start school with a combination of "learning at school (in small groups)" and "distant learning".
Procedures like entering the school compound, regulations in the classroom and during breaks remain similar to the situation at the end of the previous school year.
School starts on Tuesday, 1 September.
The new first graders will have their first day of school on 7 September.
Classes 1 to 4 will come to school from Monday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Classes 5 to 12 will come to school from 7:45 AM to 1:00 PM on certain days as shown below.
Due to our teaching capacity at the moment, lessons have to end at 1:00 PM (not 2:00 PM) for the time being.
Classes 1 and 2 will have lessons as a whole class group.
From grade 3 upward, classes with more than 18 students will be divided into smaller groups.
Schedule for the first two weeks:
Monday |
Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Saturday |
Grade 1 - 4 | Grade 1 - 4 | Grade 1 - 4 | Grade 1 - 4 | - |
5B 6B 8 B 11A/S 11B 12A/S 12B |
5 A 7 B 10 A+B 11A/S 12A/S |
6 A 8 A+B 9 A+B |
5B 7 A+B 11A/S 11B 12A/S 12B |
5A 6 A+B 7 A 8 A 9 A+B 10 A+B 12A/S 12B |
Students of grade 1-4 enter and leave the school compound through the main gate.
Students of grade 5-12 enter and leave the school compound through the side gate (next to the Garden Tomb).
Again, please keep in mind that it might be necessary to re-adjust schedules and timetables at the end of the first school week in order to comply with official regulations and internal evaluation.
We assure you that we do our utmost - together with the Parents Advisory Committee - to find the best possible solution for each class and our whole school community.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Best regards
Dr. Eva Schönemann
Information (25/8/2020)
Dear SSJ parents -
We hope you and your families are all well and healthy and you could relax and enjoy the summer break.
As we are approaching the beginning of the new school year, the Ministry of Education has announced regulations and conditions for learning and teaching at school.
Basically, the goal is to offer as many regular lessons as possible in class and at school.
School starts on Tuesday, 1 September.
The new first graders will have their first day of school on 7 September.
Classes 1 to 4 will come to school from Monday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Classes 1 and 2 will have lessons as a whole class group.
Classes 3 to 12 will be divided into smaller groups.
Classes 5 to 12 will come to school on two or three days.
Days and times for the individual classes will be announced as soon as possible.
Additionally school days will be used for distant learning via Google classroom.
-
The students of grade 1, 2, 3, 4, come through the main entrance.
- The students of grade 5 to 12 come through the entrance at the sports field.
- The students line up at the marked places in the school yard or on the sports field.
- The students hand in daily the health declaration signed by their parents (without this health declaration no student is allowed to enter the school building).
- The students’ temperature will be measured.
- The students go with their teacher to wash their hands.
- Only then students are allowed to go to the classroom together with their teacher.
- In the classroom, they receive hy-gel for their hands only from the teacher. We recommend that students bring their own hy-gel, too.
- Students have to bring their own masks.
In the first week of school, there will be no online teaching sessions or video meetings for classes.
Students must be picked up on time or leave the premises, as no after school service or supervising is possible.
After-school-activities can also not be offered under the current circumstances.
Our school kiosk will be open, offering sandwiches, snacks and drinks, but no salads.
We recommend students to bring their own water, as water dispensers cannot be used in school.
Again, please keep in mind that it might be necessary to adjust the schedules according to the current situation and updated regulations.
Timetables could be adjusted at the end of the first school week, especially if more direct lessons at school are possible.
We do thank all parents and students for their flexibility and patience.
I am very much looking forward to seeing all our students again.
Warm regards
Dr. Eva Schönemann

Dear Parents and Friends of our school -
As our summer break is approaching, teachers, staff and administration wish the whole Schmidt-Schule community peaceful and healthy summer holidays!
Abuna Stephan Wahl sends his greetings with a special prayer and blessing - and our teachers wish "Schöne und erholsame Ferien!"
May God bless you,
Lord of the world,
Lord of the ages,
Lord of the ways.
God himself, the eternal one,
grant you to look back
on this passed year of school.
To see what has been successful,
achievements and bright moments,
days full of light,
to see what has not been successful,
disappointments and failures
days full of clouds.
Friends, walking along your side,
people you love,
people who support,
to encourage and comfort,
who honestly share with you
their thoughts and concerns,
telling you the truth
in love about yourself,
people to laugh with -
free and at ease.
Have a good thought
for those you struggle with,
for those you do not like,
those who demanded from you,
as you demanded from them.
Be generous, be tolerant,
and merciful.
Your teachers stood at your side,
trying to equip you
with knowlegde, with competence
and discernment.
Teaching you
not to conclude too quickly,
not to follow idle chit-chat,
but to discern before you decide.
Some you have liked,
some you have endured
- we are all but humans.
Remember them kindly.
Blessed be all of them,
blessed be your family –
those who are thankful
to have you.
Have a good time,
enjoy the summer,
and return sound and healthy.
May God bless you,
Lord of the world,
Lord of the ages,
Lord of the ways.
Information (15/6/2020)
As this extraordinary school year 2019-20 is coming to an end, I want to inform you about the coming days and write about the next academic year, too.
For the last days of this school week, we will adjust our schedule, as the number of students coming to school has been decreasing.
Classes 1-3 will continue with their lessons in school as usual on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Classes 4-11 will only have distant learning from Tuesday to Thursday. Class teachers will arrange and meet their class via video-meetings.
As usual, students will receive their report cards at the end of the school year. However, due to the current situation, report cards will not be handed out during the lessons, but can be picked up by parents at the school gate according to the following schedule:
-
classes 1-4 on Thursday, from 8:00-11:00
- classes 5-7 on Friday, from 9:00-11:00
- classes 8-9 on Monday from 12:00-16:00
- classes 10-11 on Tuesday from 12:00-16:00
In order to enable a smooth procedure on these days, we kindly remind you to cover your open balances before the respective collection date. The accountant section is available this week from Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 16:00 to accept your payments or to arrange individual meetings with the Head of the Administration.
In addition, we would like to remind you to register for the next school year.
Perspectives for the academic year 2020-21
The beginning of the new school year is in certain ways still uncertain.
As school administration, we are preparing for a usual academic year. From an organisational perspective, we now have the experience of logistically and organisationally running our school according to the official hygienic standards and regulations, and are therefore prepared for various scenarios so that, if necessary, we can react flexibly.
The first day of school for classes 2-12 is planned for Monday, 31 August 2020. In the first week lessons start at 7:45 AM and finish by 1:10 PM. There will be no waiting room available during the first week.
Our distant learning/e-learning will be evaluated in the summer break. During the past weeks the importance of this topic has become obvious to our whole school community and we will continue to extend this field with all responsibility. In case that distant learning has to be continued, we plan to make the use of Google Classroom obligatory for classes 2-12.
At this point...
I wholeheartedly want to thank all parents for their support! I do know that the past months have not been easy – for all of us. We all had to shift from our usual everyday life into a crisis mode with lots of new and unknown challenges. Your understanding, patience and positive support have meant a lot to us and helped us to navigate the troubled waters of the Corona crisis.
I did appreciate very much that many of you worked together with us and thus supported our whole school community, e.g. as PAC speakers or as class representatives, for the benefit of our students.
Dear students, I now want to address you directly.
You have come to know your Schmidt-Schule through a new perspective during the last months.
You have literally been pulled out from your school and have had to organize your own learning at home. After the closure of schools and then a partial reopening a few weeks ago, you have gone through a combination of learning at school and learning at home. Maybe some of you enjoyed sleeping in and the independent and unusual style of work. However, many of you told me that you have missed the time in school and the time with classmates dearly.
At the moment, nobody can predict when schools will return to “business as usual“. But it is my sincere wish that we can return to “school as usual“ as soon as possible – in a safe and responsible environment.
I wish all of you a relaxing and peaceful summer holiday!
Stay healthy and warm regards
Dr. Eva Schönemann

The Coronavirus situation is developing.
Schmidt-Schule monitors the current situation here in Jerusalem and is following the guidelines issued by local and international authorities.
We strongly recommend parents of our school community to discuss health issues and preventative measures related to the current situation with their children.
Health workers from the Ministry of Health (Natali) informed our students in lectures and classroom discussions about preventative measures and appropriate hygienic behaviour in school (sneezing etiquette, washing of hands, using antiseptic gel - antiseptic devices are installed in all bathrooms of our school).
In case of sickness, we urgently ask parents to leave their daughter at home and not send her to school.
In order to minimize risks, the school has decided to cancel our participation in the music competition „Jugend Musiziert“ in Italy and to postpone our student exchange trip to Freiburg. Furthermore, we refrain from the participation of our students in public events until further notice.

Dear SSJ Parents and Friends -
Graduation of classes 12
On 12 May Schmidt-Schule said "goodbye" to our graduates from Year 12. Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa and German representative Peter Beerwerth encouraged the graduates to make use of the skills and knowledge acquired during their school education at Schmidt-Schule.
Certificates and school diplomas were presented in a colourful ceremony with various speeches, music and dance performances. Fourteen girls finish their school education with Tawjihi certificates, thirteen girls received their German Abitur certificates.
Leen Jewarish and Raghad Zaghal were awarded with a full scholarship from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) for studies at a German university.
Reema Arbid was awarded with the Mary-Ward-Prize for outstanding social commitment.
Mabruk to all our outstanding graduates!
Sports Days
Looking back at the year 2017-18, it was a very productive and fruitful year for our students who participated in the sport activities and tournements which took place in different schools and clubs.
These activities enabled our students not only to play sport but also to learn about people and places, and help them develop their personalities.
Our students excelled in many fields such as basketball, handball, and gymnastics - and participated in the Sport Days showing great enthusiasm and fun!
Our thanks go to all who facilitated and helped in making this school year a success and special thanks to our sport teachers.
Arts Project
The Art Activity group participated in the "Al Bait Baitak" arts project. This project explored how to use discarded materials from businesses in our neighbourhood and to create artifacts from it.
The project was sponsored by UNDP, the Ministry of Commerce and the EU. A successful exhibition was held at the French Institute to display the students' wonderful products.
Warm regards

Dear SSJ Parents and Friends -
"Youth Music" federal competition 2018 with three successful girls from Schmidt-Schule
After having successfully passed through two rounds of the music competition “Jugend musiziert”, on regional level in Talitha Kumi in January and the second level in Istanbul in March, three girls from Schmidt-Schule were qualified to travel to the Federal Youth Music competition in Lübeck, Germany.
The federal competition is the final stage of a music competition, which started with 25,000 young people in the first phase, of which only 2,500 young musicians from Germany and the German schools in Europe and the eastern Mediterranean made it until the last round which took place in the Hanseatic city Lübeck. Here the highly talented musicians met with their peers to face the jury, consisting of a total of 150 professors.
The bassoonist Marian Baddour, Class 7, is the youngest participant of Schmidt-Schule who has ever made it to this final. In Lübeck she was awarded for her very good performance. Accompanied by music teacher Erwin Meyer, she offered a varied programme with works of different eras and styles from Baroque to Jazz.
The soprano Suheir Abu Shamsieh, Class 11, was accompanied by our volunteer Serafina Kommissari at the piano. Both were rated as a duo in the category of song and and they won a 3rd prize; they presented works mainly from the Romantic period, but also works of classical and twentieth-century music.
Mabruk to our outstanding girls!
Class 12B presented a literature project, supervised by their Arabic teacher Mrs Ruba, and supported by music teacher Mrs Mariam, the school choir and the band.
In this project, the school community was introduced to the two Palestinian writers Mahmoud Darwish and Gibran Khalil Gibran through short scenes, songs, poetry, as well as a Dabke dance, performed by classes 9 and 11, in the setting of an oriental café.
Prior to their presentation, the students had visited the Mahmoud Darwish Museum to collect information and photos of the famous poet.
Parents, students, teachers, and friends of the school community honored this colorful and creative event with standing ovations.
"The Sound of Peace" - Schmidt-Schule Choir performes at Katholikentag in Münster, Germany
From 5-15 May the choir of Schmidt-Schule travelled to Germany, where the group experienced a true rejuvenation; you can say Schmidt-Choir 2.0 was formed. A total of 14 new singers joined the choir and merged with the experienced ones to a musically convincing overall group. The journey was led by Choirmaster Erwin Meyer, accompanied by Sister Ecaterina CJ and Alina Jololian from Admin.
Well prepared with many songs about "peace" and a Dabke-dance, the choir travelled by bus to Münster in Westphalia. There the group stayed in the wonderfully located youth hostel at the Aasee. On the first evening the group joined the opening ceremony at the Cathedral Square in Münster, where also German President Frank-Martin Steinmeier was present.
Then a total of five concerts followed: three times the choir sang open air on large squares in front of the Münsterland Hall, the Ägidienplatz and at the stand of the DVHL, among the listeners also Cardinal Woelki, Archbishop of Cologne. He found honorable words for the choir and surprised each girl with chocolate; since the DVHL financed the journey of the choir substantially, the DVHL-representative Mr. Thiel was very happy about this visit.
Another concert took place in the St. Joseph Church, where the choir managed to attract a lot of visitors and filled the church. A special concert took place on the evening of Ascension Day: in the Peace Hall of the Historical Town Hall was a concert presenting highlights from the music competition “Jugend musiziert” with winners from Egypt, Italy, Turkey, Greece and Palestine. The choir of the Schmidt-Schule framed the impressive music evening, which was initiated by Prof. Ulrich, the chairman of the competition. In addition to the choral contribution, Suheir Abu Shamsieh from grade 11 presented herself as a soloist, accompanied by Prof. Rademacher. The audience thanked for the whole evening with standing ovations over many minutes. Ulrich Rademacher invited the whole group to a private party to his house in Münster, where much more music was played and sung.
Best regards

Dear SSJ Parents -
On Tuesday, 20 February, between 10:00 am - 12:00 pm sirens in Jerusalem sound an alarm and schools conduct a missile drill.
Students, teachers and staff practise moving to shelter areas in their school when the sirens sound.
Our teachers have already begun to inform students about this drill and practise the security procedures in our school.
We ask our students to address this topic with their parents, too - why such drills are done and what kind of feelings and fears might come up in such a situation. We recommend that you take time to discuss this with your daughter. We want your daughter to feel safe and secure at their school.
If you have any comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best regards
